Electronic ICU offers telemedicine technology and monitoring for Advocate Aurora Health

Meritus RICUnit floorplan

OAKBROOK TERRACE, IL – The new 8,820 sf eICU is part of a planned consolidation of digital remote patient care and resource management departments out of the hospital and into commercial space.  When complete, the eICU will be collocated with the Patient Command Center and Central Telemetry.  The eICU offers telemedicine technology and monitoring for critical care patients in support of and with physicians and nurses in all of Advocate’s ICUs plus additional outreach patients across the country. The command center implements state-of-the-art technology in a 24/7 operation to remotely monitor patients’ vital signs, lab results, and communicate directly with the patient and their care team in a secure private manner.

Physician workstations each have 10 monitors with a camera, while nurse workstations have 6 monitors and a camera.  Key to the design of this space as a whole and the workstations themselves was to ensure patient privacy, while supporting a collaborative team effort.  Being a mission critical 24/7 operation required the addition of a dedicated generator and central uninterrupted power supply (UPS) system.  The HVAC system was reprogrammed to operate 24 hrs/day and technology support rooms are supplied with supplemental cooling.

Increased employee satisfaction is a direct result of moving out of basements and closets into a large work space with windows on all exterior walls.  In addition to the well lit open work area, are offices, a conference room, huddle space, break area, and locker room.  An adjacent common area used by all three departments provides a kitchen, break area, and private phone/ meditation rooms.

M&CA provided all planning, architectural, and interior design services.
