Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
Edward-Elmhurst Health System
Naperville IL

First in the region with private NICU rooms, Edward Hospital converted an existing Medical-Surgical patient floor into a 22-private bed, Level III, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Each room provides parents with the privacy to interact with their child, family members and clinical staff, but also interact with other families going through a similar situation. Strong patterning on the floor is meant to evoke the idea of area rugs, creating home-like surroundings and maintains a low key, familiar environment. The soothing colors and soft forms of the nursing stations break down the barrier between family and caregiver resulting in a higher quality of care and effective support mechanism for the patient.
